What is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan?
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is a medical procedure that uses a magnetic field to generate clear and accurate 2D or 3D images of body parts and internal organs. MRI can capture data that cannot be collected by other technologies such as X-rays, ultrasounds and CT scans.
How do I have an MRI?
You can have a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan at one of our Imagix clinics offering this service. Make sure you have your prescription on hand to make an appointment online or by phone.
How is an MRI performed?
During the procedure, you must lie down on the device table with the part of the body to be examined positioned in the centre of the cylinder. The table slides into the tunnel containing the scanning magnet. The inside of the unit is well lit, and a fan circulates fresh air.
To plan your activities, please note that the total duration of the visit can vary between 60 and 90 minutes, even if the exam itself only lasts 20 to 60 minutes.
For more information on the procedure, see our detailed section on magnetic resonance imaging.
When should I have an MRI?
An MRI is usually performed when the doctor suspects a problem that is difficult to detect during a physical check-up. MRI is used to examine certain parts of the body and determine if you have a disease.
To find out about the different types of MRIs available at Imagix, consult our detailed section on magnetic resonance imaging.
How long does it take to send the report to my doctor?
Results are sent by fax, electronic medical record (EMR) or mail within 2 to 3 business days of the procedure.
